Introduction

Biomedical Engineering is multidisciplinary, has large number of sub-specialities and is developing fast. Therefore, it is difficult for any university, especially for the new and/or small ones, to produce high quality and up-to-date education material.

What is EVICAB

EVICAB is a high quality, free access Biomedical Engineering Curriculum on the Internet

Each partner university has their own Biomedical Engineering program

The students are "normal" students:

  • degree students
  • exchange students
  • visiting students
  • international program students

    EVICAB provides a Virtual University Platform for a Biomedical Engineering Program

    The partner universities offer BME courses to EVICAB. The courses are accepted to EVICAB by the Steering Group. Courses may also be provided by co-operating universities outside the consortium. The courses must be recognized by at least one unversity to be used in Bachelor/Master/PhD -studies

    Partner universities take courses from EVICAB to their own Biomedical Engineering program. Courses may also be taken by co-operating universities outside the consortium.

    Build-up of the BME Curriculum

    EVICAB creates a platform for a BME curriculum on the Internet. Universities may propose a course to EVICAB. The Steering Group decides what courses are accepted to EVICAB. EVICAB will get the courses free of charge. The courses are updated and maintained by those universities which produced them.

    Objectives

    The objective of the proposal is to develop, build up and evaluate sustainable, dynamical solutions for virtual mobility and e-learning that, according to the Bologna process,
    (i) mutually support the harmonization of the European higher education programmes,
    (ii) improve the quality of and comparability between the programmes, and
    (iii) advance the post-graduate studies, qualification and certification. These practices will be developed, piloted and evaluated in the field of biomedical engineering and medical physics.
    Important goal is that these approaches and mechanisms for virtual e-learning can be extended and transferred from this project also to other disciplines to promote virtual student and teacher mobility and credit transfer between European universities.

    Approach

    In this action, a framework for a sustainable Internet-based virtual biomedical engineering curriculum is developed, building on the existing expertise in the substance and e-learning technology and experience of partners, gathered in close long-term co-operation.
    The system will guarantee a sustainable learning environment and content, of which development is based on continuous dynamic peer and self evaluation and effective exploitation of information and computer technology.

    Expected results

    The common virtual curriculum and e-learning solution will integrate the synergy of European know-how to improve the teaching, learning and research activities and make the use of teaching resources more effective regionally and internationally.
    The expected results are not limited only within the project but they can provide a wider transferable solution for virtual mobility activities among all European countries and universities and their students.

    The project was funded by the European Commission for two years from 1.1.2006 till 31.12.2007.
